What is the scope of protection in the Copyright?

Copyright protects original creative works from being copied or used without permission. In India, it applies to literary, musical, dramatic, and artistic works, as well as films and sound recordings. This means books, songs, paintings, movies, and even audio recordings are safeguarded under copyright laws.

However, copyright only protects the way an idea is expressed, not the idea itself. For example, if two people come up with the same story concept, but write it in their own unique way, both versions can be copyrighted. But the general idea behind the story cannot be protected. Similarly, copyright does not cover processes, methods, or mathematical formulas.

The main goal of copyright protection is to ensure that creators have control over their work and can benefit from it. It prevents unauthorized copying, distribution, and adaptation, giving creators the legal right to take action if someone misuses their content.
